It is the best book I have ever read about computers. I read The Soul of a New Machine for the first time when I was in high school. Way back in the 60s and 70s, there used to be a minicomputer company named Data General. That confession comes from Tracy Kidder, author of nine nonfiction books, including 1981's The Soul of a New Machine, which won the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction and a National Book Award. A review of Tracy Kidder's classic tech book, The Soul of a New Machine, which is still relevant today. It was actually quite successful for some time and competed with the giant DEC. Guri Sohi, instructor of my Intro to Computer Engineering course, recommended this book during a particularly tense Monday morning lecture. It's news to me jessamyn's dad is Tom West, "the figure at the center of Tracy Kidder's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1981 book The Soul of a New Machine," or that she first saw the internet with pictures in Romania. It is one reason I ended up working in software engineering.
